Sushi roll was good. Delicious sauce on Godzilla roll but it could have been rolled smaller. Tasted great but slightly fell apart. Glad I went but the poor reviews are somewhat warranted. Ambience is poor and they could have more discounts to bring more people to make up for poor reviews. Bottom line I will try them again since no others within walking distance.

This place had great food! From the sushi all the way down. The only thing I don't like is the actual restaurant itself, it's not a good location in the middle of a strip mall and the interior just doesn't make for good ambiance. But the food is delicious! I would recommend.

I really used to like this place, but it seems that something's gone wrong over there. The sushi is really not that great. Also, it's very overpriced. My usual is around $9 for 6 pieces of sushi. That's not a lot of bang for your buck. Another drawback is the service. I've really had hit and miss experiences there. Sometimes, the service is prompt and professional, just what you expect from a restaurant. However, I've also had hellaciously bad service as well. I can remember one occasion where my wife and I waited over an hour for our meal, at a time when the restaurant was not that busy. Overall, if asked to go back, I'd decline. I love sushi, but not at these prices. For the same amount I'd pay to eat here, I can drive to Fargo and experience great sushi at Yuki Hana.

DO NOT GO HERE. I ordered food to-go and when I got home I looked at the food, ate a bite and threw it away. They gave me stale fried rice. Actually, I would call it rice with some soy sauce, nasty old rice. The beef was nasty too. Old Meat. ahhhhh Egg Roll - no comment. WTH, god will punish for making nasty asian food. C'mon

Fishes on my tongue Slide quickly down my gullet Please don't make me sick (OK, I'll be honest. I had HIGH hopes for this place. I was SO excited to be able to order sushi up here in the frozen tundra. I'll try to keep this review somewhat brief, but it's going to be a little longer than I normally go. Let's begin... Entering the restaurant, you get the feel of a 'lower end' sushi place. There are napkin dispensers at the tables, cheap posters hastily hung on the wall, and the tables are squished together. I have no problem with cheap sushi places, but unfortunately the prices at Kon Nechi Wa's are far from cheap. Hoping for the best, we placed an order for some sushi rolls AND a regular entree. We opted to NOT try the sashimi on the first visit. The service was poor at best, simply because they couldn't handle the pace of the Friday night business. Our entree came out before the sushi, and the rolls came out one at a time over the course of about 30 minutes. The restaurant uses cheap plastic plates, which certainly detracts from the dining experience. The sushi itself was on the lower end of preparation quality. Disappointingly, the $17 entree we tried was essentially a glorified fried rice dish. Now, all of that being said, I will still probably end up going back again sometime. Let's be honest... there aren't a whole lot of sushi options up in good ol' Grand Forks! I've heard Sanders and Level 10 now offer it, but only on certain days. So, let's bring it home and summarize. Kon Nechi Wa's provides low-quality sushi (and some mediocre entrees) for overinflated prices, and does so in a less than attractive setting. There. I've said it. Now let's all cross our fingers and hope that the restaurant IMPROVES instead of declines. Otherwise, this place will (and should) go belly up!)

One star since I would give them zero but I can't. The only thing that they have going for them is that they have no competition so they rock the GF scene.

To sum it all up: -Overpriced -Bad ambience -Poor service -Low-grade sushi Kon Nechi Wa's is the epitome of the ethnic restaurants of Grand Forks trying to be what they are not, continually failing at what they do with little or no regard to maintaining food and cultural authenticity. They are doing nothing more than bringing fake and misrepresented "authentic cuisine" to the Grand Forks restaurant scene, much like the famous Paradiso Restaurant. My first experience with Kon Nechi Wa's was shortly after my arrival into Grand Forks in 2004. They had recently moved to the Menard's shopping center. I, being the dumb and naive west coast native who assumed every part of the US had food as good as all the other great culinary wonders of the west and east coasts, happily moseyed my way to Kon Nechi Wa's for sushi. When I arrived I was greeted by a ditsy young waitress who led me to my booth through a cast of horrid florescent office lighting. Before I even tasted the food, I was overtaken by the Midwestern-style interior décor you'd noramally see in a sleazy rural North Dakota café or in the Lundegaard's house from the movie Fargo - you know, the overuse of 1980's oak wood furniture, forest green accents, brushed brass fixtures, and bland white walls - which totally confused me because I didn't come in for a greasy burger or North Dakotan interpretation of Italian food at Italian Moon. I came for sushi! Add in the random Japanese decorations among the shenanigans and I was asking myself what I got into. The waitress sits me down and hands me the menu, informing me of the sweet and sour pork special of the day. Sweet and sour pork?! WTF?! Did she all of a sudden teleport me to a Chinese restaurant? Strike 4,492. Everything at this point is going wrong at this place. It's as if they have to lure the local North Dakotan residents into trying Japanese food by enticing them with greasy Chinese food - something they're more used to. I ordered miso soup (which was way overpriced and excessively salty), a volcano roll, and sashimi (hamachi and tuna). Sitting there listening to the buzzing florescent lighting above me, a la the movie Office Space (I almost swore I was hallucinating cubicles - was I in a corporate office?), I couldn't help but wonder why a Japanese restaurant would violate the tradition of having prominant open glass display of its fresh seafood. The sushi, in great disappointment, was prepared behind-the-scenes. No sushi bar. No itamae (sushi chef). No flair. Dull ambience. Dull dining experience. Dull service. Dull everything. The waitress brings me my food to me within 20 minutes. No chopsticks. No soy sauce. No ginger. No shoyo dish for my soy sauce. Just a fork. If you are a sushi connoisseur, you know that requiring your guests to ask for these necessary accompaniments is a huge violation of sushi restaurant etiquette. The volcano roll wasn't so bad actually, perhaps the low-grade sushi was masked by the tasty spicy volcano sauce. The sashimi, however, was a huge disappointment. What can we expect though? We're in the furthest possible location from the ocean and furthest from any sort of civilization, so I have to give them some credit. Kon Nechi Wa's, I appreciate the fact that your co-owner is from Japan, but please don't dumb down the sushi experience - it is a slap in the face to Japanese culture and misrepresenting Japanese cuisine is doing a disfavor to the locals who might not otherwise be able to experience real authentic Japanese food in their lifetime.
